IUCN status
Near ThreatenedAbout the Gag Grouper
The Gag Grouper is a master of camouflage, typically displaying a drab, mottled-gray body that blends seamlessly with its surroundings. While it lacks the distinctive streamer-points on its tail fin found in scamp or yellowmouth groupers, look for its unique pattern of dark, box-shaped spots. These markings can sometimes resemble the black grouper, but the Gag generally has a less defined pattern and a more pointed snout. This robust fish is built for powerful, quick strikes on its prey.

Habitat
Gag Groupers are commonly found in the warmer waters of the West Atlantic, favoring rocky bottoms, ledges, and wrecks. They prefer structural ambush points from shallow coastal reefs down to depths of several hundred feet.
Distribution
This species ranges throughout the warmer parts of the West Atlantic, including the entire Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, extending north to North Carolina.
Behaviour
These opportunistic predators are known for their ambush tactics, often lurking within or near structure to dart out and engulf unsuspecting prey. They primarily feed on small fish, squid, and crustaceans. While generally territorial, Gag Groupers exhibit seasonal movements, migrating to deeper offshore waters during colder months to spawn, often forming large aggregations.
Edibility
★★★★★
Gag Grouper is highly prized as excellent table fare, offering firm, flaky, white meat with a mild, sweet flavor. It holds up well to various cooking methods, making it a favorite among seafood connoisseurs.
Lure suggestion
Anglers targeting Gag Groupers find great success with live baits such as pinfish, cigar minnows, or mullet, fished on stout tackle near rocky ledges or wrecks. Heavy jigs, bucktails, and large lipped diving plugs can also provoke aggressive strikes when trolled or retrieved near structure. A knocker rig or a fish-finder rig with a heavy lead is often effective for presenting bait directly on the bottom where gags lurk.
