About the Kelp Bass

Kelp Bass are identifiable by their mottled, olive-brown to greenish-yellow bodies, covered in irregular dark blotches and spots that provide excellent camouflage within kelp forests. They have a moderately compressed, oval-shaped body with a slightly pointed head and a large mouth. A distinguishing feature is the three to five broad, indistinct vertical bars on their sides, often fading or becoming more prominent depending on their environment. Their fins are typically dark, blending with their overall appearance.

Habitat

True to their name, Kelp Bass are primarily found in kelp beds, using the dense canopy for cover, feeding, and spawning. They also frequent rocky reefs, jetties, oil platforms, and other submerged structures offering complex topography and ambush points. Younger fish often inhabit shallower, more protected waters, while larger adults can be found in deeper kelp forests up to 150 feet.

Distribution

This species inhabits the eastern North Pacific Ocean, ranging from the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, northward to Washington, United States, though their presence in the northernmost part of this range is rare. They are most abundant in the waters off Southern California and Baja California.

Behaviour

Kelp Bass are opportunistic ambush predators, primarily feeding on smaller fish like anchovies, sardines, and midshipmen, as well as squid, crustaceans, and other invertebrates found within their kelp forest habitat. They are territorial and often hold to specific structures, darting out to strike prey. Their activity tends to increase during cooler parts of the day and around tidal changes.

Lure suggestion

Anglers find success targeting Kelp Bass with a variety of offerings. Live bait, such as anchovies, sardines, or squid, drifted near kelp patties or rocky structures, is exceptionally effective. Artificial lures like lead-head jigs with plastic grubs, swimbaits, and surface iron can also provoke aggressive strikes, especially when fished around structure or kelp beds.
