Habitat
This apex predator thrives in warm, freshwater environments, often found in slow-moving rivers, canals, and lakes. They prefer areas with abundant submerged structure such as fallen trees, weed lines, and rocky banks, which provide ambush points for their prey. In introduced regions like Florida, they've adapted well to canals and urban waterways.
Distribution
Native to the Guianas and parts of Brazil, particularly the Marowijne, Essequibo, and Branco River drainages, the Peacock Bass has also been successfully introduced as a popular sportfish to other tropical and subtropical regions, including Florida, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
Behaviour
Peacock Bass are notoriously aggressive, sight-feeding predators that ambush their prey with explosive force. They primarily feed on smaller fish, chasing them down with remarkable speed and power. During spawning seasons, they become particularly territorial, fiercely guarding their nests and fry, which makes them even more aggressive towards intruders, including lures.
Edibility
★★★★★
Known for its firm, white, and flaky meat, Peacock Bass offers a mild, sweet flavor that is highly regarded among anglers and chefs alike. It holds up well to various cooking methods, making it a delicious and versatile meal.
Lure suggestion
Peacock Bass are notorious for their explosive topwater strikes, making prop baits, poppers, and walking baits exceptionally effective. Subsurface lures like jerkbaits, lipless crankbaits, and swimbaits also provoke aggressive reactions, especially when retrieved erratically. For a surefire bite, live shiners or other small baitfish rigged appropriately are often irresistible.
