Also known as
Spotty Bass, Spotted Bay Bass, Bay Spotty
IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Spotted Sand Bass
The Spotted Sand Bass is easily recognized by its distinctive dark spots covering its olive-to-brown body, fading to a whitish belly. It has an elongated, somewhat compressed body typical of its bass relatives. A prominent feature is the series of dark blotches along its lateral line, often forming bars, distinguishing it from other inshore bass species. Its robust build and large mouth indicate its predatory nature.

Habitat
These inshore brawlers prefer shallow coastal waters, often found lurking around rocky reefs, kelp beds, docks, and pilings within bays and estuaries. They are masters of ambush, blending seamlessly with their diverse structural habitats. Look for them near any kind of cover.
Distribution
Its range extends from Southern California, particularly abundant in the bays and harbors, south along the Baja California peninsula. They are a common catch for anglers in these regions.
Behaviour
Spotted Sand Bass are opportunistic ambush predators, feeding primarily on smaller fish, crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, and squid. They are active hunters, often waiting in cover to dart out and strike prey with surprising aggression. Anglers appreciate their aggressive fighting style, characterized by strong headshakes and powerful runs towards structure.
Edibility
★★★★★
Their firm, white, flaky flesh is considered excellent table fare, though not as highly prized as some other bass species. They are delicious pan-fried, baked, or grilled.
Lure suggestion
For anglers, Spotted Sand Bass respond well to a variety of artificial and live baits. Soft plastic swimbaits and grub tails rigged on lead heads are highly effective, as are jerkbaits and topwater lures during active periods. Live bait such as anchovies, sardines, or ghost shrimp fished on a Carolina rig or a light lead head often produce consistent bites.
