Habitat

This flatfish prefers sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal waters, typically found at depths ranging from 5 to 73 meters. It often buries itself partially in the substrate, waiting for prey. Anglers will find them in estuaries, bays, and offshore near ledges or other structures that provide cover and food.

Distribution

The Windowpane Flounder has a wide distribution across the Western Atlantic Ocean, extending from the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada southward all the way to Florida in the United States.

Behaviour

As an ambush predator, the Windowpane Flounder spends much of its time camouflaged on the seafloor, patiently waiting for unsuspecting prey to pass by. It feeds primarily on small crustaceans, worms, and tiny fish that inhabit the bottom. Their movements are typically short, darting bursts when striking at food or relocating, rarely venturing far from the bottom.

Edibility

★★★★

Known for its delicate, white, flaky flesh, the Windowpane Flounder makes for excellent table fare. Its mild flavor is highly sought after by seafood enthusiasts, making it a prized catch.

Lure suggestion

Target Windowpane Flounder using classic bottom fishing rigs, such as a high-low rig or a simple dropper loop with a sinker. Effective baits include strips of squid, small pieces of clam, or bits of fresh cut fish. Artificial options like scented soft plastics (e.g., Gulp! sandworms or shrimp imitations) fished slowly along the bottom on a small jig head or flounder rig can also be highly productive.
