Atlantic Angel Shark
Squatina dumeril
Also known as
Sand Devil, Atlantic Sand Devil
IUCN status
VulnerableAbout the Atlantic Angel Shark
The Atlantic Angel Shark is a master of disguise, easily mistaken for a large skate or ray due to its remarkably flattened body and broad, wing-like pectoral and pelvic fins. Its camouflage, often mottled brown or grey, helps it blend seamlessly into sandy or muddy bottoms. Unlike true rays, it retains distinct dorsal fins and gill slits on its sides, not underneath, revealing its shark lineage.

Habitat
This intriguing bottom-dweller prefers a sandy or muddy substrate. Anglers can find them in shallower inshore waters during the warmer summer and fall months, transitioning to deeper offshore environments as winter and spring approach.
Distribution
They are primarily found along the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, ranging off the eastern coast of the United States, throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico, and potentially extending into parts of the Caribbean Sea.
Behaviour
Atlantic Angel Sharks are ambush predators, often burying themselves in the sand with only their eyes exposed, patiently waiting for unsuspecting prey. They primarily feed on smaller bottom-dwelling fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, snapping them up with surprising speed. Their seasonal movements involve migrating between inshore and offshore waters based on temperature.
Edibility
★★★★★
The flesh of the Atlantic Angel Shark is considered good eating, often described as firm, white, and flaky, with a mild flavor similar to skate or other flatfish.
Lure suggestion
Targeting these bottom-dwellers requires a sturdy bottom fishing rig with a heavy lead sinker and a strong circle hook. Effective baits include fresh cut fish (like mullet or mackerel), squid, or large shrimp. Cast into sandy or muddy areas and allow your bait to sit patiently on the bottom.
