Gafftopsail Catfish
Bagre marinus
Also known as
Gafftop, Sailcat, Tailed Catfish
IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Gafftopsail Catfish
Easily identified by its elongated, sail-like dorsal fin and long, ribbon-like adipose fin, the Gafftopsail Catfish is a striking fish. Its body is typically dark gray to blue-black on top, fading to silver or white on its belly. Anglers should exercise caution, as this species possesses sharp, venomous spines on its dorsal and pectoral fins, which can inflict painful wounds if not handled carefully. Its sleek, scaleless body and prominent whiskers complete its distinctive appearance.

Habitat
This catfish is primarily found in coastal marine and brackish waters, frequently inhabiting shallow bays, estuaries, surf zones, and nearshore areas. They often congregate around structure, such as pilings, jetties, and natural bottom contours, but can also be found over sandy or muddy bottoms.
Distribution
The Gafftopsail Catfish ranges throughout the western central Atlantic Ocean, including the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
Behaviour
Gafftopsails are opportunistic feeders, cruising throughout the water column to prey on a diet consisting mainly of crustaceans like crabs and shrimp, as well as smaller fish. They are known to school, often forming large aggregations. Notably, the male of the species exhibits unique parental care, mouthbrooding the fertilized eggs until they hatch.
Edibility
★★★★★
Often underrated, the Gafftopsail Catfish offers firm, white, mild-flavored meat that is good for frying or grilling. Proper cleaning and removal of the skin are key to enjoying this species at the dinner table.
Lure suggestion
These aggressive feeders respond well to a variety of baits. Live or dead shrimp, squid, and cut fish are highly effective when fished on the bottom or suspended under a float. Small artificial baits such as soft plastics on jig heads or spoons can also entice a strike, especially when retrieving through the water column where they often feed.
