Least ConcernAbout the Longear Sunfish
The Longear Sunfish is a strikingly beautiful panfish, easily identified by its vibrant, iridescent blue-green markings on the head and gill covers, contrasting with an olive to rusty-brown back. Its distinctive elongated opercular (gill) flap, often edged in red or orange, gives it its common name. While most average smaller, these feisty fighters can grow up to 9 inches and weigh over a pound, offering a surprising challenge on light tackle.

Habitat
These colorful sunfish prefer clear, slow-moving waters in streams, rivers, and occasionally lakes. Look for them in areas with ample aquatic vegetation, submerged logs, rocky structures, or undercut banks where they can find cover and ambush prey.
Distribution
Native to eastern North America, their range extends broadly from the Great Lakes region southward to northeastern Mexico.
Behaviour
Longear Sunfish are aggressive feeders, primarily preying on insects and small invertebrates, though larger individuals may opportunistically take small fish or fish eggs. They are highly territorial, especially during the spring and early summer spawning season when males guard their shallow, saucer-shaped nests. Anglers will find them active throughout the day, particularly in warm, sunny conditions, offering consistent action.
Edibility
★★★★★
Known for their sweet, flaky white meat, Longear Sunfish are excellent table fare. They are particularly good pan-fried whole or filleted, making them a popular choice among panfish enthusiasts.
Lure suggestion
For consistent bites, try small artificial lures like tiny inline spinners, micro jigs, or wet flies. Natural baits such as small worms, crickets, or grasshoppers fished under a bobber are also highly effective, especially when targeting larger specimens. Use ultralight tackle for maximum fun.
