IUCN status
VulnerableAbout the Blue Shark
The Sand Tiger Shark, Carcharias taurus, is often recognized by its menacing, perpetually exposed, needle-like teeth, even when its mouth is closed. Despite their fearsome appearance, these sharks are generally docile towards humans. They possess two dorsal fins of similar size, a pointed snout, and a somewhat flattened, conical body. Their coloration is typically brownish-grey on top, fading to a lighter belly, sometimes with darker spots on their flanks.

Habitat
These sharks prefer the continental shelf, thriving in a variety of environments from sandy shorelines and submerged reefs to depths of up to 191 meters (627 feet). Anglers can often find them cruising near rocky outcrops, wrecks, and structures that provide shelter and attract prey.
Distribution
Globally, the Sand Tiger Shark inhabits subtropical and temperate waters. Its extensive range includes the waters off Japan, Australia, South Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, and along the east coasts of both North and South America.
Behaviour
Sand Tiger Sharks are generally slow-moving, nocturnal hunters that feed primarily on bony fishes, crustaceans, and squid. They are unique in their ability to gulp air from the surface, storing it in their stomach to maintain neutral buoyancy, allowing them to hover motionless in the water column while ambushing prey. They are often seen cruising slowly near the bottom or around structures during the day.
Lure suggestion
For anglers targeting Sand Tiger Sharks, heavy tackle is essential, including stout rods, large reels, and strong braided line with a heavy mono or wire leader. Large cut baits, such as mackerel, bunker, or bluefish, presented on a stout circle hook fished on the bottom, are highly effective. Live baits like eels or small fish can also tempt these opportunistic predators.
