IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Blueline Tilefish
The Blueline Tilefish is a distinctive deep-water inhabitant, typically sporting an iridescent blue-gray body that fades to white on its belly. Its most notable feature is often a striking blue or yellow-blue line running from behind its eye towards its gill plate, giving it its common name. They possess a somewhat elongated body with a slightly blunt head and a single, long dorsal fin, making them readily identifiable among other bottom dwellers.

Habitat
Blueline Tilefish prefer the deep, cool waters of the continental shelf, typically dwelling over mud and rubble bottoms. Anglers will find them in depths ranging from approximately 75 to 200 meters, though they can be found even deeper, to at least 236 meters.
Distribution
This species is found in the Western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from off the coast of Virginia south through Florida, and throughout the Gulf of Mexico.
Behaviour
These opportunistic bottom feeders primarily forage on benthic invertebrates, including various crustaceans, mollusks, polychaetes (marine worms), and brittle stars. They also supplement their diet with smaller fishes. Their feeding habits keep them close to the seafloor, making them a prime target for deep-drop fishing methods.
Edibility
★★★★★
Blueline Tilefish are considered excellent table fare, highly sought after for their firm, white, flaky flesh and mild, sweet flavor. They are often compared to snapper or grouper in quality and are marketed fresh due to their high demand.
Lure suggestion
Targeting Blueline Tilefish requires heavy deep-drop tackle, including electric reels for efficiency. Effective setups include bottom rigs with two or three large circle hooks (6/0 to 9/0), weighted heavily with 1 to 3 pounds of lead to reach the desired depths. Preferred baits are squid, cut fish (like mackerel or bonito), or whole small fish, presented close to the seafloor where they feed. Vertical jigging with heavy metal jigs can also be productive.
