About the Caribbean Sharpnose Shark

The Caribbean Sharpnose Shark is a slender, streamlined requiem shark, typically growing up to about 1.1 meters (3.6 feet) in length. It gets its name from its distinctive, elongated, and pointed snout. Its coloration is generally grayish or brownish on the dorsal side, fading to a lighter, often white, underside, providing effective camouflage in its marine environment. Like other sharpnose sharks, it possesses small, sharp teeth adapted for grasping prey.

Habitat

This shark inhabits tropical and subtropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It can be found from the surface down to depths of 500 meters, preferring coastal and offshore waters over continental shelves and slopes.

Distribution

Its geographic range extends throughout the warm waters of the western Atlantic, from the southeastern United States down to the coasts of Brazil, encompassing the entire Caribbean Sea.

Behaviour

As an active predatory shark, the Caribbean Sharpnose Shark is known to feed on a variety of small bony fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. It is a relatively fast swimmer, often encountered in schools or loosely associated groups. While not considered highly migratory, individuals may move between inshore and offshore areas seasonally in response to prey availability and water temperature.

Edibility

★★★★★

When properly handled and prepared, the meat is considered fair to good. It is often consumed fresh, fried, or grilled, with a mild flavor characteristic of many smaller shark species.

Lure suggestion

For anglers targeting Caribbean Sharpnose Sharks, fresh cut bait such as squid, small fish (e.g., mullet, pilchards), or shrimp rigged on a simple bottom setup with a wire leader is highly effective. Chumming can increase your chances of attracting these sharks. They are also known to strike artificials, though bait is generally more reliable.
