IUCN status
Critically EndangeredAbout the Great Hammerhead Shark
The undisputed heavyweight champion of the hammerhead family, the Great Hammerhead Shark is an impressive sight, growing up to 20 feet long. Anglers can readily identify this colossal predator by its distinct, T-shaped head, or cephalofoil, which has an almost straight leading edge. This unique head shape, coupled with its exceptionally tall, sickle-shaped first dorsal fin, sets it apart from its smaller hammerhead relatives. Its formidable size and unique profile make any encounter unforgettable.

Habitat
This apex predator prefers warm, shallow waters, typically found cruising coastal areas and along the continental shelf. While often seen near shore, it can also venture further offshore, often patrolling reefs and deeper drop-offs.
Distribution
Its impressive range spans tropical and warm temperate waters across all major oceans globally. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, anglers in warmer climes have the chance to encounter this magnificent shark.
Behaviour
Great Hammerheads are formidable, active predators, known for their powerful hunting prowess. They use their unique cephalofoil to detect electrical signals from prey and even to pin down stingrays, a favored food source. These highly migratory sharks undertake seasonal movements, often following warmer waters and large prey aggregations. While typically solitary, they are occasionally observed in groups.
Lure suggestion
Targeting Great Hammerheads requires heavy-duty tackle and substantial baits. Whole large fish like bonito, mackerel, or barracuda, and even live stingrays (where permitted), are effective. Rigging should consist of heavy wire leaders, stout circle hooks (18/0 or larger), and a robust mainline to withstand their incredible power and endurance.
