Least ConcernAbout the Leopard Shark
The Leopard Shark is a sleek, slender-bodied shark instantly recognizable by its beautiful dark markings. Its back is adorned with striking black saddle-like blotches and large spots, giving it a distinctive 'leopard' pattern. Anglers can expect to encounter individuals typically measuring between 3.9 and 4.9 feet, making them a respectable catch. This unique coloration makes it a visually impressive species to spot in the shallows or on the end of your line.

Habitat
Leopard Sharks are commonly found in shallow coastal waters, including bays, estuaries, and sandy flats, often near kelp beds or rocky reefs. They prefer soft bottoms where they can forage for food. Anglers often find them cruising in relatively calm, protected areas.
Distribution
This species ranges along the Pacific coast of North America, from Oregon in the U.S. down to Mazatlán in Mexico. Anglers can target them throughout this extensive stretch of coastline.
Behaviour
Leopard Sharks are opportunistic bottom feeders, cruising the seabed for crustaceans, clams, worms, and small fish. They are often seen in large schools, a common sight for coastal anglers. While active day and night, they frequently move into shallower bays and estuaries, particularly during warmer months, for both feeding and pupping.
Edibility
★★★★★
Leopard Shark is considered excellent table fare by many, offering firm, white, mild-flavored meat. It can be prepared in various ways, including grilling, frying, or baking, and is often compared favorably to other premium whitefish.
Lure suggestion
For Leopard Sharks, bottom fishing with natural baits is highly effective. Try using cut bait such as squid, anchovies, or sardines, or even shrimp, presented on a Carolina rig or a dropper loop with a circle hook. They are not typically targeted with artificial lures, preferring the scent and taste of natural offerings.
