Habitat

This species is a bottom dweller, frequenting sandy, muddy, or rocky seafloors. It's found at depths ranging from 33 to 299 feet, but anglers will most commonly encounter them in the 79 to 180-foot range, especially around submarine canyons or offshore reefs.

Distribution

The Ocean Whitefish is native to the eastern Pacific Ocean, commonly ranging from central California south to Peru and extending to the Galapagos Islands. While rarer, they can also be found further north, occasionally reaching Vancouver, British Columbia.

Behaviour

Ocean Whitefish are opportunistic feeders, primarily consuming crabs, shrimp, worms, squid, and small fish from the seafloor. They tend to congregate in schools or smaller groups, actively foraging over various substrates. When hooked, they are known for their strong, steady pull, offering a good fight, especially on lighter tackle.

Edibility

★★★★

Considered excellent table fare, Ocean Whitefish boasts firm, white, flaky meat with a delicate, sweet flavor. It's versatile and holds up well to grilling, baking, frying, or steaming.

Lure suggestion

These fish respond exceptionally well to natural baits. Try squid strips, cut mackerel, sardines, or shrimp fished on a dropper loop rig or a two-hook gangion. Leadhead jigs tipped with a strip of squid or cut bait are also highly effective, especially when bounced near structure or over rocky bottoms. Fish directly on the bottom where they feed.
