About the Oceanic Whitetip Shark

The oceanic whitetip shark is easily identified by its notably large, paddle-like pectoral and dorsal fins, which are distinctively rounded and often tipped with white, especially in younger individuals. Its stocky body, typically grey or brownish-grey on top with a white belly, can grow quite large, sometimes exceeding 10 feet. Its broad, rounded snout and small, triangular teeth are adapted for its opportunistic pelagic lifestyle.

Habitat

As a truly pelagic species, the oceanic whitetip spends its life in the open ocean, far from coastlines. It prefers warm tropical and temperate waters, frequently found near the surface in deep oceanic basins, often around oceanic islands, continental shelves, and even in areas with strong currents or upwellings.

Distribution

This wide-ranging shark inhabits all tropical and warm temperate seas globally, from the Atlantic to the Indo-Pacific. While widespread, its populations have suffered significant declines, making encounters increasingly rare in many parts of its historical range.

Behaviour

An opportunistic and inquisitive predator, the oceanic whitetip is known for its slow, cruising demeanor, often seen lazily circling ships. However, it can become highly active and aggressive when food is present, feeding on bony fish, stingrays, sea turtles, seabirds, and even carrion. They are often found near tuna schools, offshore banks, and deep-water drop-offs, sometimes following ships for discarded refuse.

Lure suggestion

Targeting oceanic whitetips requires heavy offshore tackle. Large, natural baits like whole tuna, bonito, or mackerel fished on heavy leader (300-500 lb monofilament or cable) with 16/0 to 20/0 circle hooks are essential. Chumming with cut fish or fish oil is highly effective for attracting them from a distance. Fish these baits suspended at various depths in open ocean areas where these sharks are known to patrol.
