About the Tiger Shark

The formidable Tiger Shark is a large, powerfully built shark recognized by its distinctive dark, vertical stripes or bars, which are more prominent in juveniles and tend to fade with age. Its broad, blunt snout and robust body give it an imposing presence. Reaching impressive lengths, this apex predator also features a long, pointed upper lobe on its caudal fin.

Habitat

Found in a wide range of marine environments, Tiger Sharks inhabit warm tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. They are highly adaptable, frequenting both shallow coastal areas like estuaries, reefs, and lagoons, as well as deeper pelagic oceanic waters.

Distribution

This species has a widespread global distribution, thriving in temperate and tropical oceans across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean basins.

Behaviour

A solitary and largely nocturnal hunter, the Tiger Shark is an opportunistic apex predator with an incredibly varied diet, consuming anything from fish, rays, and other sharks to sea turtles, birds, and even marine mammals and carrion. Known for its strong migratory patterns, it often travels long distances between breeding and feeding grounds. Anglers should be prepared for a powerful, determined fight.

Edibility

★★★★★

While edible and consumed in some regions, the flesh of the Tiger Shark is often considered to have a strong, gamey flavor and can be coarse. Due to its position at the top of the food chain, it can also accumulate high levels of mercury.

Lure suggestion

Targeting Tiger Sharks requires heavy-duty tackle capable of handling immense power. Large, fresh, bloody baits such as whole or cut mackerel, tuna, bonita, or other oily fish are highly effective. Rigging should include heavy wire leaders and stout, sharp hooks. Chumming can help attract these powerful predators to your fishing grounds.
