About the Whale Shark

The Whale Shark is the largest fish in the world, easily identified by its colossal size, often reaching 40 feet or more, and its distinctive grey body marked with an intricate pattern of white spots and stripes. Its massive, terminal mouth, which can span over four feet wide, is perfectly adapted for filter feeding. Despite its shark classification, its docile nature and slow movements make it a majestic and harmless encounter for ocean-goers.

Habitat

These pelagic giants inhabit tropical and warm-temperate waters worldwide, often found in both oceanic and coastal areas. They are frequently observed near the surface in plankton-rich upwellings and around coral reef systems.

Distribution

Globally distributed, Whale Sharks are found in all tropical and warm-temperate oceans, migrating vast distances. Key aggregations occur in regions such as the Philippines, Mexico, Australia, and the Galapagos.

Behaviour

Whale Sharks are slow-moving filter feeders, cruising with their mouths open to strain plankton, small fish, and invertebrates from the water. They are largely solitary but can form large aggregations at specific feeding grounds. Their migratory patterns are often linked to plankton blooms and changes in ocean temperature.

Lure suggestion

Whale Sharks are filter feeders and do not respond to traditional angling methods, lures, or baits. They are strictly planktivores and should never be targeted with fishing gear. If encountered, admire them from a respectful distance without attempting to interact or attract them.
