White Shark

Triaenodon obesus

Also known as

White-tipped Reef Shark, Blunthead Shark, White-tip Shark

About the White Shark

Often mistaken for a larger predator, the Whitetip Reef Shark is a relatively small shark, rarely exceeding 5.2 feet in length. Its sleek, slender body is complemented by a distinctively short, broad head. Look for the unique tubular skin flaps near its nostrils and its striking oval eyes with vertically slit pupils. Most notably, its dorsal and upper caudal fins are tipped with bright white, making identification straightforward among reef dwellers.

Habitat

This agile shark is a prominent resident of coral reefs across its range, preferring shallow, clear waters. It is commonly found patrolling reef flats, slopes, and occasionally deeper lagoon areas. They often rest in caves or under ledges during the day.

Distribution

The Whitetip Reef Shark is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the central Pacific islands. Its range extends north to Japan and south to Australia.

Behaviour

Primarily a nocturnal hunter, the Whitetip Reef Shark emerges at dusk to forage for small bony fishes, octopuses, and crustaceans that hide within the reef structure. Unlike many sharks, it can remain motionless on the seabed, pumping water over its gills. They often hunt in groups, cornering prey in crevices, showcasing an opportunistic and cunning approach to feeding.

Lure suggestion

While not typically targeted, Whitetip Reef Sharks can be caught incidentally when fishing near reefs. They respond well to live or fresh cut bait, particularly small reef fish or squid, presented on a strong circle hook with a wire leader. Bottom fishing or drifting over reef edges with heavier tackle is advisable, as they are powerful fighters for their size.
