Least ConcernAbout the American Plaice
The American Plaice is a right-eyed flatfish, generally oval-shaped with a body that is typically brownish to reddish-brown on its eyed side, often exhibiting a paler, almost white, underside. Its texture can feel somewhat rough due to small scales, and it possesses a relatively large mouth compared to some other flatfish. While adults can reach up to 80 cm, anglers commonly encounter smaller specimens.

Habitat
This deepwater flatfish prefers soft, muddy, or sandy bottoms across its extensive North Atlantic range. It is most commonly found at depths between 90 and 250 meters, thriving in cold, temperate to Arctic waters. Though less common, it can inhabit waters as shallow as 10 meters and as deep as 3,000 meters.
Distribution
Found throughout the North Atlantic, the American Plaice has a wide geographic spread. In the Northwest Atlantic, its range extends from Greenland and Labrador south to Rhode Island. In the Northeast Atlantic, it is found from Murmansk to the English Channel, including the waters around Ireland and Iceland.
Behaviour
As a bottom-dwelling ambush predator, the American Plaice primarily feeds on a variety of invertebrates such as polychaete worms, crustaceans, and mollusks, supplementing its diet with small fish. It is a relatively sedentary species, often burying itself partially in the soft substrate to await unsuspecting prey. Their movements are largely confined to their preferred deepwater, soft-bottom habitats.

Lure suggestion
For American Plaice, bottom fishing with natural baits is highly effective. Use high-low rigs or simple bottom rigs with a pyramid or bank sinker heavy enough to reach and hold the bottom in deeper waters. Effective baits include fresh clam, strips of squid, sea worms, or small pieces of cut fish. Focus your efforts over muddy or sandy flats, especially near drop-offs or ledges where they forage.
