Arctic Char
Salvelinus alpinus
Also known as
Arctic charr, European char, fjord char
IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Arctic Char
Arctic Char are magnificent cold-water fish, boasting a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body characteristic of the salmonid family. Their coloration is highly variable, often silver with light spots in marine environments or deep, vibrant hues of olive, orange, and red, with distinct pale spots, when in freshwater or during spawning. Males can develop a pronounced kype (hooked jaw) during the breeding season, adding to their striking appearance. They are often mistaken for Brook Trout, but Arctic Char typically have a deeper, more robust body.

Habitat
These resilient fish thrive in the frigid, oxygen-rich waters of alpine lakes, arctic, and subarctic coastal regions. You can find them in lacustrine (lake-dwelling), riverine (river-dwelling), or anadromous (sea-run) forms, each adapting to its specific environment. Their preference for cold water means they often inhabit deeper sections of lakes during warmer months.
Distribution
Arctic Char possess an impressive circumpolar distribution, making them the most northerly occurring freshwater fish species on Earth. They inhabit vast areas across the Arctic and Subarctic regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. Notably, no other freshwater fish can be found as far north, exemplified by their presence as the sole fish species in Lake Hazen.
Behaviour
Arctic Char are opportunistic predators, feeding on a diverse diet that includes aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and other fish like sculpins and sticklebacks. Anadromous populations undertake significant migrations from the ocean back to their natal freshwater rivers and lakes to spawn, a spectacle often marked by brilliant spawning colors. They are known for powerful runs and dives when hooked, especially larger specimens.
Edibility
★★★★★
Renowned for its delicate, firm, and flaky pink to orange flesh, Arctic Char is considered a prime table fare. Its flavor is often described as a delightful cross between salmon and trout, less oily than salmon but richer than most trout. It cooks beautifully, whether grilled, baked, or smoked.
Lure suggestion
When targeting Arctic Char, light to medium spinning gear or fly fishing setups are ideal. Small spoons, inline spinners, and jigs in silver, gold, or bright colors like orange and red are highly effective, often presented with a slow, deliberate retrieve. For fly anglers, streamers mimicking baitfish or large nymphs can entice bites.
