IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Blackfin Tuna
The Blackfin Tuna is the smallest of the true tuna species, recognized by its torpedo-shaped body and distinctive dark, almost black, pectoral fins. Its dorsal side boasts a dark blue to black hue, transitioning to silvery sides, often with a subtle golden wash or iridescent yellow finlets along its back. Averaging around 20 pounds, these powerful fish can reach lengths of up to 39 inches and weigh over 40 pounds, providing a formidable fight on light tackle.

Habitat
Blackfin Tuna are pelagic fish, preferring warm, tropical, and subtropical waters. They are frequently found offshore around reefs, ledges, and temperature breaks, often congregating near Sargassum weedlines or floating debris that provide cover and baitfish aggregation.
Distribution
Their distribution is limited to the Western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the coast of Massachusetts south through the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and down to Brazil.
Behaviour
These are schooling fish, often found in large groups, and are aggressive, opportunistic feeders. They prey on a variety of small baitfish, squid, and crustaceans, and are known for their explosive strikes and powerful, sustained runs. Blackfins are active throughout the day, but often feed most intensely during low light periods like dawn and dusk.
Edibility
★★★★★
Blackfin Tuna offer excellent table fare, with rich, firm, dark red meat. They are highly prized for sashimi and sushi when fresh, and also grill, sear, or smoke wonderfully.
Lure suggestion
Anglers often find success trolling small feathers, jet heads, or cedar plugs at moderate speeds. Live bait such as pilchards, sardines, or small squid drifted or slow-trolled near structure or weedlines can be incredibly effective. For an exciting topwater bite, casting small poppers or stickbaits into a feeding frenzy is a thrill, and vertical jigging with small metal jigs can also produce strikes.
