Habitat

Cowcod inhabit deep, structured environments such as rocky reefs, offshore banks, and submarine canyons. They are typically found at depths ranging from 200 to over 1,200 feet, preferring areas with complex bottom topography that provides cover and ambush points.

Distribution

Their geographic range extends along the Eastern Pacific Ocean, primarily from central California (around Point Conception) southwards down the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. They are often concentrated around specific offshore islands and submerged banks.

Behaviour

As opportunistic predators, Cowcod feed on a diet consisting of smaller fish, squid, and various crustaceans, ambushing prey from their rocky lairs. They tend to be relatively sedentary, often solitary or found in small aggregations within their preferred deep-water habitats. Their movements are generally localized once they establish a territory on a suitable reef.

Edibility

★★★★

Cowcod offer excellent table fare, boasting firm, white, and flaky meat with a mild, sweet flavor. It is highly regarded by many anglers and chefs, suitable for various cooking methods including baking, grilling, and frying.

Lure suggestion

Targeting Cowcod requires heavy tackle to reach their deep-water habitats. Effective baits include fresh or frozen squid, cut mackerel, or anchovies, presented on a heavy dropper loop rig with large J-hooks or circle hooks. Vertical jigging with heavy metal jigs or large leadhead jigs tipped with soft plastics can also be successful, ensuring the presentation reaches the bottom where these fish reside.
