Dolly Varden
Hepatus epheliticus
Also known as
calico crab, Dolly Varden crab
About the Dolly Varden
This striking crustacean is easily identified by its distinctive carapace, which can reach up to 3 inches in width. Its shell is a vibrant display, featuring large, eye-catching red spots, each outlined with a darker border, giving it a 'calico' or 'Dolly Varden' pattern. Like other true crabs, it possesses a sturdy, broad body with ten legs, including two powerful claws, though its overall size is relatively modest.

Habitat
Preferring the calm embrace of shallow coastal waters, the Calico Crab typically inhabits sandy or muddy bottoms. It can be found in bays, estuaries, and nearshore areas where it can readily bury itself for protection or ambush prey.
Distribution
Its distribution spans the western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the northern reaches of the Chesapeake Bay southward along the coast to the tropical waters of the Dominican Republic.
Behaviour
As a benthic dweller, the Calico Crab spends much of its time partially buried in the substrate, waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey or scavenge for detritus. It is an opportunistic feeder, consuming small invertebrates, carrion, and organic matter. While generally slow-moving, it can dart quickly to escape predators or seize a meal, using its strong claws effectively.
Edibility
★★★★★
While edible, the Calico Crab is not typically a primary target for its meat due to its relatively small size. Its flesh, though sweet, is often reserved for culinary uses where smaller crabs are appropriate, such as broths, bisques, or as a flavorful addition to seafood stocks.
Lure suggestion
Anglers wishing to catch Calico Crabs will find success using simple methods, such as baited crab traps or hand lines. Pieces of fish, chicken necks, or other meaty scraps make excellent bait to entice these opportunistic feeders. Look for them in shallow, sandy or muddy bottomed areas, particularly near estuaries and grass flats.
