About the Northern Snakehead
The Northern Snakehead is an elongated, snake-like freshwater fish with a prominent, almost reptilian head and large mouth filled with sharp, conical teeth. Its body is mottled brown to golden brown with distinctive dark blotches and stripes, providing excellent camouflage in weedy environments. Anglers often note its powerful, muscular body and large dorsal fin, giving it a truly predatory appearance.

Habitat
This adaptable predator thrives in shallow, heavily vegetated freshwater environments such as ponds, swamps, canals, and sluggish rivers. Its remarkable ability to breathe atmospheric air allows it to survive in low-oxygen waters and even move short distances over land, enabling it to colonize new habitats rapidly.
Distribution
Native to Eastern Asia, specifically spanning from the Amur River basin in Russia down through China, North Korea, and South Korea to Hainan. It has been widely introduced and is now firmly established as a highly invasive species in parts of the United States and Europe, notably in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US.
Behaviour
A formidable ambush predator, the Northern Snakehead feeds on nearly any aquatic or terrestrial creature it can overpower, including other fish, frogs, crustaceans, and even small mammals or birds. It's known for explosive, aggressive strikes, particularly when targeting prey or protecting its offspring. Its unique respiratory system allows it to persist in harsh conditions and move between water bodies by wriggling across damp ground.
Edibility
★★★★★
Widely regarded as excellent table fare, offering firm, white, flaky flesh with a mild flavor that stands up well to various cooking methods. In many regions, anglers are encouraged to harvest and consume them due to their invasive status.
Lure suggestion
Target Northern Snakeheads with topwater lures such as frog imitations, rats, and buzzbaits fished over heavy surface vegetation, as their explosive strikes are legendary. Subsurface options include weedless soft plastic swimbaits, chatterbaits, and spinnerbaits retrieved slowly through thick cover. Live bait like shiners or small sunfish can also be exceptionally effective.
