Habitat

Exclusively marine, octopuses inhabit a wide range of environments from shallow coastal waters to the deep sea. They typically prefer rocky reefs, coral formations, and sandy or muddy bottoms where they can find ample hiding spots in crevices, caves, or discarded shells.

Distribution

Octopuses are found in all the world's oceans, from tropical to temperate and even polar regions. Their diverse species occupy various depths, making them a globally distributed group of marine predators.

Behaviour

These nocturnal and solitary predators are highly skilled hunters, preying on crabs, lobsters, and various fish species. They move by crawling along the seafloor using their arms or employing jet propulsion for quick bursts of speed, especially when escaping danger. When threatened, they are known to squirt a cloud of dark ink, confusing predators and allowing for a rapid getaway.

Edibility

★★★★

Octopus is considered very good table fare, offering a firm, somewhat chewy texture and a distinct, subtly sweet flavor. It's a popular delicacy globally, often prepared by grilling, braising, or frying, after proper tenderization.

Lure suggestion

Anglers often target octopuses using specialized octopus jigs or traps, which can be weighted and lowered into known octopus habitats like rocky crevices or under ledges. Baited lines or pots with fresh fish scraps, crab, or shrimp are also highly effective. Patience is key, as they often need to be coaxed out of their lairs.
