About the Permit

The Permit is a strikingly beautiful and powerful game fish, recognized by its deep, compressed, silvery body. Habitat

These elusive fish frequent shallow, inshore waters. Anglers typically find them tailing over clear sandy flats, marl bottoms, seagrass beds, and around mangrove shorelines and channel edges, often in depths of just a few feet.

Distribution

Primarily inhabiting the western Atlantic Ocean, their range extends from Florida throughout the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, south to Brazil.

Behaviour

Permit are renowned for their keen eyesight and wary nature, making them a challenging target. They are opportunistic feeders, primarily hunting for crabs and shrimp over the flats, but will also consume smaller fish. They often "tail" as they root for crustaceans in the substrate. Once hooked, they are incredibly strong fighters, known for long, powerful runs.

Edibility

★★★★

The firm, white, flaky meat of the Permit is highly prized by many, offering a mild and delicious flavor that holds up well to various cooking methods.

Lure suggestion

Sight fishing with live crab imitations, especially small blue crabs, fiddler crabs, or even quartered blue crabs, is the most effective method. Artificial crab flies and small jigs or soft plastics resembling shrimp can also entice a bite from a willing Permit. Present your offering subtly and well ahead of the fish, as they are notoriously spooky.
