Habitat
This demersal species prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, typically found in deeper waters ranging from 150 to over 1,800 feet. Look for them on the edges of continental shelves and deep banks where they can blend seamlessly with the substrate.
Distribution
Petrale Sole are endemic to the Eastern Pacific, with their range extending from Baja California northwards along the coast to the Gulf of Alaska. They are a common target species throughout much of the West Coast.
Behaviour
As ambush predators, Petrale Sole spend much of their time partially buried in the sediment, waiting for unsuspecting prey to pass by. They primarily feed on small crustaceans, worms, and juvenile fish. While not known for strong seasonal migrations, they may move to shallower depths for spawning.
Edibility
★★★★★
Renowned for its delicate flavor and firm, white, flaky flesh, Petrale Sole is considered one of the finest eating flatfish on the Pacific coast. It's incredibly versatile and holds up well to various cooking methods.
Lure suggestion
For Petrale Sole, bottom fishing is key. Effective methods include using a simple lead-head jig tipped with a strip of squid or a small piece of baitfish, or a double dropper loop rig with baited hooks (squid, clam, or shrimp) fished on the bottom. Slow drifts over sandy flats in deep water are often productive.
