About the Queenfish

Queenfish are sleek, silver-bodied predators renowned for their speed and acrobatic fighting style. They possess a distinctive streamlined profile with small, almost imperceptible scales, giving them a smooth, leathery appearance. Many species feature a series of dark spots or bars along their flanks, which can vary in intensity. Their powerful, forked tails drive explosive bursts of speed, making them challenging and exhilarating targets for anglers.

Habitat

These agile fish typically inhabit coastal waters, including shallow inshore flats, estuaries, rocky headlands, and around jetties and piers. They are also frequently found cruising near coral reefs and submerged structures, often in waters less than 50 meters deep.

Distribution

Queenfish are widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the East African coast across to the Pacific islands and northern Australia.

Behaviour

Queenfish are voracious ambush predators, often hunting in schools, preying on smaller baitfish, squid, and crustaceans. They are known for their incredibly fast, aggressive strikes and their spectacular aerial displays when hooked, leaping high out of the water in an attempt to dislodge the lure. Anglers often encounter them feeding actively on the surface, especially during tide changes.

Edibility

★★★★★

While not considered top-tier table fare by all, Queenfish have firm, white flesh with a mild flavor, best enjoyed fresh. They can be good eating when bled quickly and handled well, suitable for pan-frying, baking, or in curries.

Lure suggestion

To target Queenfish, fast-moving lures are key. Metal slugs, stickbaits, and poppers retrieved at high speed often elicit explosive strikes. Soft plastics on a weighted jig head or unweighted, worked erratically, can also be effective. Live bait such as pilchards, prawns, or small hardyhead minnows fished under a float or unweighted will also prove irresistible.
