About the Quillback

The Quillback Rockfish is easily identified by its distinctive, sharp, venomous spines along the dorsal fin, from which it gets its name. These robust fish display a mottled orange-brown coloration, providing excellent camouflage against rocky reef environments. Adults typically range from 2 to 7 pounds, though some can grow considerably larger, reaching lengths up to 3 feet.

Habitat

True to their name, Quillback Rockfish are reef dwellers, favoring rugged saltwater environments with plenty of rocky structure, crevices, and kelp beds. They prefer deeper, cooler waters where they can ambush prey and find shelter.

Distribution

These rockfish are commonly found along the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from Alaska down to central California. They are a staple catch in many coastal fishing communities within this range.

Behaviour

Primarily ambush predators, Quillback Rockfish feed mainly on crustaceans, darting out from their rocky hideouts to snatch unsuspecting prey. They are relatively sedentary, typically remaining close to their preferred rocky structures. Anglers will find them holding tight to the bottom, often in dense schools.

Edibility

★★★★

With firm, white, flaky flesh, Quillback Rockfish are considered excellent table fare. They have a mild, slightly sweet flavor that lends itself well to a variety of cooking methods.

Lure suggestion

For effective angling, target these bottom-hugging fish with jigs tipped with scented soft plastics or strips of bait, or use a classic shrimp or squid bait on a dropper loop rig. Fish close to the structure, as they rarely stray far from cover.
