Habitat

These rockfish are true denizens of the deep, primarily inhabiting saltwater reefs and rocky bottoms. They prefer complex structures like rock piles, kelp beds, and submerged ledges, often found in depths ranging from 50 to several hundred feet where they can ambush prey and seek shelter.

Distribution

Quillback Rockfish are found along the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from the Gulf of Alaska south to central California. They are a common target species in the cooler, nutrient-rich waters of this region.

Behaviour

Primarily ambush predators, Quillback Rockfish are relatively sedentary once they find a suitable rocky lair. They feed mainly on crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp, but will also opportunistically consume small fish and cephalopods that venture too close to their territory. They tend to stay close to the bottom and structure, rarely straying far from their home reef.

Edibility

★★★★

Quillback Rockfish offer firm, white, flaky meat with a mild, delicate flavor, making them an excellent choice for a variety of culinary preparations. They are highly prized by anglers for their table quality, whether baked, fried, or grilled.

Lure suggestion

To target Quillback Rockfish, focus on fishing directly over rocky bottom and reef structures. Jigs tipped with scent or soft plastic swimbaits are highly effective, as are baited rigs using squid, anchovies, or cut bait on a dropper loop. Use heavy tackle to quickly lift them away from snags and be prepared for a strong, head-shaking fight.
