About the Yelloweye Rockfish
The Yelloweye Rockfish is a truly impressive catch, recognizable by its striking orange to reddish-orange body and, most distinctively, its bright, piercing yellow eyes. These large, robust fish possess a heavily spined dorsal fin and a broad body, making them one of the biggest and most sought-after members of the rockfish family. Their vibrant coloration and imposing presence make them unmistakable in the deep-water realm.

Habitat
These long-lived fish prefer deep, rocky habitats, typically found lurking around submerged pinnacles, ledges, and rocky reefs. They inhabit depths ranging from approximately 100 feet down to over 600 feet, often positioning themselves near structure where they can ambush prey.
Distribution
Yelloweye Rockfish are found along the Pacific coast of North America, from the Gulf of Alaska south to Northern California.
Behaviour
Primarily solitary, Yelloweye Rockfish are ambush predators, feeding on a variety of smaller fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. They are slow-moving and demersal, meaning they stay close to the seabed. Known for their extreme longevity, these fish can live for well over a century, contributing to their slow growth rate and vulnerability to overfishing.
Edibility
★★★★★
Widely regarded as one of the finest eating fish from the Pacific, Yelloweye Rockfish offers firm, white, flaky fillets with a mild, sweet flavor. It holds up exceptionally well to various cooking methods, making it excellent for baking, grilling, or frying.
Lure suggestion
Target Yelloweye Rockfish with heavy jigs, such as large lead or flutter jigs, fished vertically directly over rocky structure. Baited rigs employing cut squid, herring, or mackerel on stout circle hooks are also highly effective when fished on a dropper loop or paternoster rig. Use heavy tackle and braided line to effectively manage deep-water currents and the strong fight of these large rockfish.
