About the Red Sea Urchin
The Red Sea Urchin is easily recognized by its robust, spherical shell covered in numerous sharp, reddish-purple spines. These spines, which can be several inches long, protect a relatively large body, with individuals commonly reaching diameters of up to 7 inches (18 cm) including spines. Their color can vary slightly from a deep red to a more brownish-red, often blending with the rocky substrate they inhabit.

Habitat
These fascinating creatures are found in shallow coastal waters, ranging from the low-tide line down to depths exceeding 330 feet (100 meters). They prefer rocky environments, often congregating in areas sheltered from strong wave action, where they can cling securely to the substrate and feed.
Distribution
Their extensive range covers the northeastern Pacific Ocean, stretching from the cold waters of Alaska all the way south to the warmer coasts of Baja California.
Behaviour
Red Sea Urchins are primarily grazers, slowly moving across the seafloor using their tube feet to consume kelp and other marine algae. They are largely sedentary, exhibiting slow movements as they forage. While they don't migrate, their feeding habits can significantly impact local kelp forest ecosystems.
Edibility
★★★★★
Highly prized for its delicate, buttery roe, known as uni, the Red Sea Urchin is considered a top-tier delicacy. Its rich, sweet, and slightly briny flavor is enjoyed raw, particularly in sushi, or as an ingredient in gourmet dishes.
Lure suggestion
Anglers do not typically 'fish' for Red Sea Urchins with conventional rod and reel setups. Instead, they are harvested by hand through diving or wading in shallow areas. Specialized tools like urchin rakes or tongs can be used to detach them from rocks. Always check local regulations for harvesting limits and seasons.
