About the Rock Crab
Rock Crabs are generally sturdy, medium-sized crustaceans with powerful pincers, perfectly adapted for crushing shells and defending themselves. Their carapace is often broad and somewhat oval, featuring a rugged, often jagged edge along the front, providing excellent camouflage in their habitat. Coloration varies but typically includes shades of reddish-brown, orange, or purple, allowing them to blend seamlessly with rocky substrates. Identifying features usually include prominent teeth-like projections on the carapace.

Habitat
As their name suggests, Rock Crabs are typically found in rocky intertidal zones and subtidal areas, often down to considerable depths. They favor crevices, tide pools, and beneath rocks, using these structures for shelter and foraging.
Behaviour
These opportunistic feeders are primarily scavengers, consuming dead fish, mollusks, and other crustaceans, but will also actively hunt small invertebrates. They are generally nocturnal, emerging from their shelters at night to forage along the seafloor. Their movement is typically sideways, and they can be quite territorial, especially around prime feeding or hiding spots.
Edibility
★★★★★
Rock Crab meat is generally sweet and flavorful, albeit often less abundant than in larger commercial crab species. The best yield comes from the large claws and legs, which offer tender, white meat excellent for steaming or boiling.
Lure suggestion
Anglers targeting Rock Crabs should use sturdy crab pots, ring nets, or snares baited with oily fish scraps, chicken, or other odorous offal. Position traps in rocky areas, tide pools, or near submerged structures where crabs are likely to shelter and forage. Ensure your gear is robust enough to withstand strong currents and potential snags.
