Habitat
These adaptable chubs inhabit a variety of riverine environments, thriving in moderate to swift currents of larger creeks and rivers. They prefer areas with rocky or gravelly substrates, often congregating in pools, runs, and the deeper sections of riffles where cover is available from rocks or undercut banks.
Distribution
Native to the arid southwestern United States and parts of Mexico, the Roundtail Chub is primarily found throughout the vast Colorado River drainage basin, including its major tributaries like the Gila River.
Behaviour
Roundtail Chubs are opportunistic feeders, preying on a wide array of insects, small crustaceans, and even smaller fish. They are active foragers, often schooling in mid-water or near the bottom, exhibiting strong swimming capabilities to navigate currents. During spawning, they migrate to shallower, gravelly areas.
Lure suggestion
For anglers, Roundtail Chubs can be quite sporting on light tackle. Small spinners, spoons, or curly-tail jigs retrieved slowly near the bottom or through deeper pools can entice strikes. Fly anglers can find success with nymphs, wet flies, and even dry flies mimicking terrestrial insects. Natural baits such as worms, grasshoppers, or crickets fished under a bobber or on the bottom are also effective.
