About the Sacramento Splittail

The Sacramento Splittail is a distinctive cyprinid, recognized by its slender, elongated body and silvery flanks that can sometimes have a brassy sheen. Its most defining feature, and the source of its name, is the noticeably forked caudal fin, with the upper lobe appearing slightly longer than the lower. Look for a small, downward-pointing mouth and relatively large scales, a characteristic reflected in its scientific name. Adults can reach up to 16 inches, making them a substantial catch among native minnows.

Habitat

These native cyprinids thrive in the slow-moving, low-elevation waters of California's Central Valley, including rivers, sloughs, and interconnected wetlands. They prefer areas with muddy or silty bottoms and often associate with submerged vegetation, making them a target in less swift currents.

Distribution

Its entire native range is confined to the Central Valley of California, primarily within the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and its tributaries.

Behaviour

Sacramento Splittail are opportunistic feeders, often grazing on detritus, algae, and small invertebrates found along the bottom or in the water column. During spring, adults undertake spawning migrations into flooded grasslands and agricultural fields. They typically inhabit slower currents, congregating in deep pools or along vegetated banks, but may move seasonally in response to water flow and food availability.

Lure suggestion

For anglers targeting Sacramento Splittail, simple bait fishing setups are often most effective. Try small pieces of nightcrawler, corn, or dough balls presented on a small hook (#6-#10) with a light sinker to keep it near the bottom. Fishing in slower-moving sections of rivers, sloughs, or flooded areas, especially during spring, can yield good results.
