About the Salmon
Often recognized by their sleek, torpedo-shaped bodies and distinctive silvery scales, many salmon species develop striking color changes as they approach spawning. Look for the small, fleshy adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, a tell-tale sign of a salmonid. Their powerful tails are built for long migrations and strong fights, making them an incredible sport fish.

Habitat
Salmon are renowned for their anadromous life cycle, beginning in freshwater rivers and streams before migrating to the vast oceans. They spend years feeding in marine environments, preferring cool, productive waters, before returning to their natal rivers to spawn.
Distribution
Primarily found in the cold temperate waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans, their migratory routes can span thousands of miles from coastal feeding grounds to inland spawning tributaries.
Behaviour
As opportunistic predators, salmon feed on a variety of prey in the ocean, including smaller fish, squid, and crustaceans, building up energy for their incredible spawning journey. During their freshwater migrations, they typically cease active feeding but will aggressively strike at anything perceived as a threat or an irritant. Their powerful, upstream movements are a spectacle of nature and a prime target for determined anglers.
Edibility
★★★★★
Highly prized for its rich, flaky, and often vibrant orange or pink flesh, salmon offers a distinctively delicious flavor. It's incredibly versatile, excellent grilled, baked, smoked, or raw in dishes like sushi.
Lure suggestion
Anglers targeting salmon successfully employ a wide array of methods, including trolling with spoons or plugs, casting spinners and large flies, or drifting cured roe. Focus on presenting lures that imitate baitfish or provoke an aggressive strike, especially during migratory runs when they are less interested in feeding.
