IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Coho Salmon
Coho Salmon are stunningly beautiful fish, recognized by their bright silver sides and dark blue to black backs, often with a slight metallic green sheen. While at sea, they typically have small, irregular black spots on their dorsal fin and the upper lobe of their caudal fin. As they approach spawning, males develop a distinctive red-pink hue on their flanks and a strongly hooked snout, or 'kype', making them easily identifiable.

Habitat
These anadromous fish spend their adult lives in the open ocean, migrating to coastal estuaries and freshwater rivers to spawn. Juveniles mature in freshwater streams and rivers for a year or two before heading out to sea. They can be found in coastal marine waters, estuaries, and inland rivers and streams.
Distribution
Coho Salmon are widely distributed across the North Pacific Ocean, ranging from Japan and Russia to Alaska and down the Pacific coast of North America to California. Their primary spawning grounds are in coastal rivers and streams along this extensive range.
Behaviour
Coho are aggressive feeders, primarily preying on smaller baitfish like herring, anchovies, and squid in the ocean. During their spawning migration, they cease feeding but can still be provoked to strike. They are known for their acrobatic jumps and strong, sustained runs when hooked, making them a thrilling sport fish.
Edibility
★★★★★
Coho salmon offer delicious, firm, orange-red flesh with a delicate flavor, making them excellent table fare. They are versatile and can be baked, grilled, smoked, or pan-fried.
Lure suggestion
For ocean fishing, trolling with spoons, hootchies, or flies behind a flasher is highly effective. In rivers, casting spinners, spoons, or drifting cured roe and various baits under a float can entice strikes. Fly anglers find success with various streamer patterns, especially during their river migrations.
