Skate fish identification

Skate

Also known as

Ray, Diamond Fish, Flapjack

About the Skate

Skates are fascinating cartilaginous fish, close relatives of sharks, characterized by their flattened, diamond-shaped or rounded bodies. Their broad, wing-like pectoral fins dominate their appearance, allowing them to glide gracefully along the seabed. Unlike true rays, skates typically possess a thicker, fleshier tail adorned with small dorsal fins near the tip, and they lack a venomous barb. Their skin, covered in small placoid scales, often features thorn-like spines, giving some species their common names.

Habitat

These bottom-dwelling creatures prefer sandy or muddy substrates, often congregating in coastal bays, estuaries, and offshore waters. They can be found from shallow, inshore areas to significant depths on the continental shelf and slope.

Distribution

Skates boast a wide global distribution, inhabiting temperate and cold marine waters across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Specific species ranges vary, but collectively, they are found worldwide.

Behaviour

Skates are ambush predators and opportunistic scavengers, primarily feeding on a diet of crustaceans, mollusks, and small bottom-dwelling fish. They move by undulating their pectoral fins, often burying themselves in the sediment to await unsuspecting prey or to evade predators. While generally slow-moving, some species undertake seasonal migrations to deeper or shallower waters.

Edibility

★★★★

The "wings" of skates are considered excellent table fare, offering a firm, flaky, white meat with a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Many compare the taste and texture to scallops or chicken.

Lure suggestion

Anglers targeting skates will find success with bottom fishing rigs, using sturdy tackle to handle their weight and resistance. Effective baits include fresh cut fish (like mackerel or herring), squid, clam, or shrimp presented on a weighted circle hook. A simple two-hook dropper rig or a Carolina rig placed directly on the seabed works well to entice these opportunistic feeders.
