IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Smallmouth Buffalo
The Smallmouth Buffalo is a distinctive, deep-bodied fish with a stocky, compressed form, often resembling a large carp but lacking barbels. Its most distinguishing feature is its small, downward-pointing (ventral or subterminal) mouth, which is located well behind the snout. Typically, its back is dark olive to brownish, fading to bronze or silver on the sides and a white belly. Anglers can identify it by its relatively small head proportional to its robust body and the sharp angle of its dorsal fin.

Habitat
This species thrives in the slow-moving waters of large rivers, reservoirs, oxbow lakes, and backwater areas. They generally prefer habitats with soft, muddy bottoms and often frequent areas with dense aquatic vegetation, demonstrating a tolerance for turbid conditions.
Distribution
Native to the major tributaries and surrounding waters of the Mississippi River basin in the United States, the Smallmouth Buffalo's range has also expanded to other water systems where it has been introduced.
Behaviour
Smallmouth Buffalo are primarily bottom-feeding omnivores, sifting through mud and detritus to consume insect larvae, small crustaceans, and plant matter. They are known to form large schools, moving slowly and deliberately near the riverbed or lake bottom. Spawning activity typically peaks in the spring, with adults migrating into shallow, vegetated floodplains or backwater areas.
Edibility
★★★★★
Often underrated, the Smallmouth Buffalo offers firm, white, and flaky flesh with a mild flavor, superior to many common rough fish. While bony, careful preparation like smoking, grinding for patties, or making scoring cuts can make it excellent table fare.
Lure suggestion
Forget traditional lures; Smallmouth Buffalo are bottom feeders. The most effective approach involves using natural baits like corn, bread dough balls, or worms presented on a tight-line or sensitive bottom rig. Target them in slow-moving water, deep pools, or near submerged vegetation, and watch for subtle bites.
