Least ConcernAbout the Swordfish
The mighty Swordfish is a truly iconic pelagic predator, easily identified by its distinctive, long, flattened bill resembling a sword. These large, elongated fish possess a round body that tapers towards the tail. Interestingly, adult swordfish are characterized by the complete absence of teeth and scales, giving them a sleek, smooth appearance. Their powerful build and unique bill make them formidable hunters and an incredible challenge for any angler.

Habitat
Swordfish are primarily oceanic, preferring the open waters of the world's oceans. They are highly migratory and can be found across a vast range of depths, from surface waters during nocturnal feeding forays to extreme deep-water habitats during the day, often along thermoclines and seamounts.
Distribution
These impressive billfish are found globally in the tropical and temperate zones of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, indicative of their wide-ranging migratory patterns.
Behaviour
As highly migratory apex predators, Swordfish are constantly on the move, chasing baitfish and squid across vast ocean stretches. They are known to feed both day and night, utilizing their 'sword' to stun or injure prey before consuming it. During the day, they often inhabit deeper, cooler waters, ascending to shallower depths at night to feed on vertically migrating organisms, making night fishing a popular and effective strategy for anglers.
Edibility
★★★★★
Swordfish is considered excellent table fare, prized for its firm, meaty texture and mild, slightly sweet flavor. It's versatile and can be grilled, seared, or baked.
Lure suggestion
Successful swordfishing often involves deep-dropping techniques using heavy tackle. Preferred baits include whole squid, large rigged ballyhoo, or mackerel, fished on specialized circle hook rigs with glow sticks or LED lights attached to attract attention in the deep. Night fishing often employs drift fishing with similar bait presentations, sometimes closer to the surface. Trolling large lures or natural baits at dawn or dusk can also be effective.
