Topsmelt
Atherinops affinis
Also known as
Topsmelt Silverside, California Topsmelt, Bay Smelt
About the Topsmelt
The Topsmelt is a slender, silvery fish, typically small, often under 10-12 inches. They are streamlined, with a moderately forked tail and relatively large eyes, perfectly adapted for schooling in open, shallow waters. Their iridescent silver flanks make them blend in well against the light in their often clear habitats, while a darker dorsal fin provides camouflage from above. They are easily identified by their schooling behavior in nearshore environments.

Habitat
These adaptable fish thrive in a variety of coastal environments. They are commonly found schooling in relatively shallow marine waters, including the sheltered confines of estuaries and bays, around rocky intertidal zones, and within the protective cover of kelp forests. They are particularly abundant in places like the San Francisco Bay.
Distribution
The Topsmelt's range extends along the eastern Pacific Ocean, from the cool waters of southern British Columbia down to the warmer coasts of Baja California. They are a prominent feature of the west coast of North America's nearshore ecosystems.
Behaviour
Topsmelt are highly social fish, typically forming large, active schools near the surface or in mid-water. They are primarily filter feeders, sifting zooplankton from the water column, but will also opportunistically feed on small invertebrates. Their schooling behavior provides safety in numbers and allows for efficient foraging, often seen dimpling the surface as they feed throughout the day.
Edibility
★★★★★
While small and somewhat bony, Topsmelt can be quite tasty when pan-fried whole until crispy, offering a delicate, mild flavor. Many anglers consider them excellent live or cut bait for larger predatory fish due to their abundance and oily flesh.
Lure suggestion
For recreational anglers, Topsmelt are readily caught on very small hooks baited with tiny pieces of shrimp, squid, or even dough balls. Sabiki rigs, fished with a slow jigging motion, are incredibly effective for catching multiple fish at once. Light tackle, such as ultralight spinning gear, makes targeting these feisty little fish a fun experience.
