Almaco Jack
Seriola rivoliana
Also known as
Highfin Jack, Pacific Jack, Longfin Amberjack
IUCN status
Least ConcernAbout the Almaco Jack
The Almaco Jack is a sleek, powerful game fish characterized by its distinctive high dorsal fin, which gives it the common name 'Highfin Jack'. Its body is typically silvery-bronze, fading to a lighter belly, with a sometimes faint amber stripe running horizontally along its flanks. Anglers often distinguish it from its close relatives, like the Greater Amberjack, by its more compressed body and the higher, more angular profile of its soft dorsal fin. It possesses a streamlined, muscular build perfectly suited for powerful runs and fights.

Habitat
Almaco Jacks are pelagic fish inhabiting offshore waters, often congregating around submerged structures such as reefs, wrecks, oil rigs, and deep rock outcroppings. They prefer depths ranging from 60 to over 200 feet, where they can ambush prey from the water column or structure.
Distribution
This cosmopolitan species is found globally in tropical and subtropical waters, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. In the Western Atlantic, they range from Massachusetts to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, and in the Eastern Pacific, from Southern California to Peru.
Behaviour
Almaco Jacks are opportunistic predators, actively hunting both day and night. They feed voraciously on a diet of smaller schooling fish, such as baitfish and sardines, as well as squid. Known for their incredible strength and endurance, they deliver powerful, drag-screaming runs, making them a formidable challenge for any angler.
Edibility
★★★★★
The Almaco Jack is highly regarded as excellent table fare. Its firm, white, tuna-like flesh is dense and rich, making it incredibly versatile for various culinary preparations. It is particularly prized for sushi and sashimi due to its clean flavor and texture, often compared to high-quality white albacore.
Lure suggestion
For Almaco Jacks, vertical jigging with heavy metal jigs (butterfly or knife jigs) is highly effective, especially when worked rapidly around structure. Live baits such as pilchards, sardines, or small squid fished on a weighted circle hook near the bottom or mid-water column are also excellent choices. Trolling large diving plugs or high-speed lures can provoke strikes from schooling fish, and sometimes surface poppers or stickbaits will draw aggressive topwater bites.
