About the Crevalle Jack

The Crevalle Jack is a powerfully built, large marine fish, instantly recognizable by its deep, compressed body and striking silver coloration, often with a yellow tint on its belly. A prominent dark spot adorns the upper gill cover, and a smaller, often subtle black spot can be seen at the base of the pectoral fin. Its large, deeply forked caudal fin, frequently yellow, is a testament to its incredible speed and fighting prowess. These apex predators possess large eyes and a broad mouth, adapted for engulfing prey whole.

Habitat

These opportunistic predators inhabit a wide range of coastal environments, from shallow estuaries and bays to nearshore reefs and open ocean waters. They are often found around structures like jetties, bridges, and channel markers, but will also venture into brackish waters. Juveniles frequently congregate in protected inshore nurseries.

Distribution

Crevalle Jacks are widely distributed across the tropical and temperate Atlantic Ocean. Their range extends from Nova Scotia, Canada, down to Uruguay in the western Atlantic, and from Portugal to Angola in the eastern Atlantic, including the Mediterranean Sea.

Behaviour

Crevalle Jacks are highly aggressive, schooling predators known for their explosive feeding frenzies, often chasing baitfish to the surface in spectacular displays. They feed voraciously on a diet primarily consisting of smaller fish like mullet and pilchards, but will also consume shrimp and crabs. Anglers can expect a brutal, tackle-testing fight characterized by blistering runs and relentless head shakes. Their movements are often seasonal, following warmer waters and large bait schools.

Edibility

★★★★★

While edible, the Crevalle Jack is not generally considered prime table fare by many, especially larger individuals, due to its strong, somewhat 'fishy' taste and firm, dark flesh. Immediate bleeding and icing are recommended if keeping for consumption to improve quality.

Lure suggestion

For anglers, Crevalle Jacks are a fantastic sport fish, responding aggressively to a variety of artificials. Fast-retrieved topwater lures, such as poppers and walk-the-dog baits, are incredibly effective and provide exciting surface strikes. Heavy spoons, jigs, and live bait like mullet, pilchards, or shrimp, fished with stout tackle, will also reliably provoke a strike from these powerful fighters.
