About the Atlantic Cod

The Atlantic Cod is a robust, elongated fish, typically sporting a mottled brownish or greenish back with a distinctive white lateral line. Its chin is adorned with a prominent barbel, a sensory organ used to forage on the seafloor. It has three dorsal fins and two anal fins, all well-separated. Its powerful tail fin helps it navigate strong currents, making it a formidable catch.

Habitat

This benthopelagic species primarily inhabits cold, deep waters of the North Atlantic, often found near the seafloor. They prefer rocky bottoms, wrecks, and uneven terrain where they can find food and shelter. They can also be found in shallower waters, especially during cooler months or when following baitfish.

Distribution

Atlantic Cod are widely distributed across the northern Atlantic Ocean, ranging from Greenland and Canada down to North Carolina, and across to Iceland, the Barents Sea, and the coasts of Europe.

Behaviour

Atlantic Cod are opportunistic feeders, preying on a wide variety of bottom-dwelling invertebrates like crabs, worms, and clams, as well as smaller fish such as herring, capelin, and sand eels. They are known for schooling in large aggregations, particularly during spawning season. Seasonal migrations occur, with cod moving to deeper waters in summer and often closer to shore in winter, following temperature and food availability.

Edibility

★★★★★

Atlantic Cod is an exceptionally popular and highly regarded table fish, celebrated for its mild flavor and firm, flaky white flesh. It's incredibly versatile and can be prepared in numerous ways, from baking and frying to steaming and grilling.

Lure suggestion

For Atlantic Cod, heavy jigs (such as Norwegian jigs or diamond jigs) bounced off the bottom are highly effective, especially when tipped with a strip of bait like clam, squid, or mackerel. Baited rigs with fresh clams, salted clam bellies, or squid chunks on circle hooks are also excellent choices. Use stout tackle, a heavy sinker to reach the bottom in strong currents, and braided line for sensitivity and strength.
