Habitat
This colossal flatfish inhabits the cold, deep waters of the North Atlantic, preferring sandy, gravel, or clay bottoms. They are typically found at depths ranging from 50 to an astonishing 2,000 meters.
Distribution
Its range spans the cold waters of the North Atlantic, from the coasts of North America (including Canada and New England) to Greenland, Iceland, and along the European coastline, particularly off Norway and the British Isles.
Behaviour
Atlantic Halibut are opportunistic ambush predators, lying camouflaged on the seabed, waiting to strike at unsuspecting prey. Their diet primarily consists of smaller fish like cod, haddock, and mackerel, as well as squid and various crustaceans. Despite their demersal nature, they are surprisingly strong swimmers, capable of undertaking extensive seasonal migrations between deeper wintering grounds and shallower summer feeding areas.
Edibility
★★★★★
Renowned for its firm, pure white flesh, Atlantic Halibut offers a delicate, mild flavor and a satisfying flaky texture. It is considered one of the finest eating fish, highly sought after by chefs and seafood connoisseurs alike.
Lure suggestion
Target Atlantic Halibut using heavy jigging gear or by deep-dropping large baited hooks, especially with whole or cut mackerel, cod, or squid. A robust conventional reel paired with a strong rod and braided line is essential for battling these powerful fish from the depths. Use strong, sharp circle hooks to ensure a good hookset in their tough mouths.
