About the California Halibut

The California Halibut is a prized flatfish, easily identified by its diamond shape and brownish, mottled camouflage that allows it to blend seamlessly with sandy or muddy seafloors. Unlike many other flatfish, its eyes migrate to the left side in about half of the individuals and to the right side in the other half, a unique characteristic. It possesses a large mouth with prominent teeth, distinguishing it from smaller, less toothy flounders. Adults typically weigh between 6 and 30 pounds, offering a substantial fight for anglers.

Habitat

California Halibut prefer sandy or muddy bottoms, often found near structure like reefs, kelp beds, and jetties. They are frequently encountered in shallow coastal waters, including bays, estuaries, and along open beaches, where they lie in ambush for prey.

Distribution

This species ranges along the Pacific Coast of North America, from the Quillayute River in Washington state south to Magdalena Bay in Baja California, Mexico.

Behaviour

A classic ambush predator, the California Halibut typically buries itself partially in the sand, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey to swim by. They are opportunistic feeders, primarily preying on baitfish such as anchovies, sardines, and mackerel, but will also consume squid and crustaceans. While often found nearshore, they are free-swimming and can move to deeper waters, particularly for spawning, before returning to shallower feeding grounds.

Lure suggestion

For anglers, live bait such as anchovies, sardines, or mackerel fished on a sliding sinker rig or dropper loop is exceptionally effective. Artificial lures like large soft plastic swimbaits, jerkbaits, and even spoons can also entice a strike when retrieved slowly along the bottom. Trolling with live bait or a well-presented swimbait is another popular and successful technique.
