About the Coonstripe Shrimp
The Coonstripe Shrimp, also known as the Humpback Shrimp, is a striking crustacean easily identified by its prominent dorsal hump and often reddish or brownish stripes across its body, giving it its 'coonstripe' moniker. Adults typically measure between 10 to 12.5 centimeters (4-5 inches) in length, though larger females can impressively reach up to 17.5 centimeters (almost 7 inches). Its robust build and distinct coloration make it a notable catch for those targeting deep-water species.

Habitat
These deep-dwelling shrimp prefer cold, dark waters, inhabiting depths ranging from 100 to 200 meters (330 to 660 feet). They are typically found on soft bottom substrates, where they can forage for food.
Distribution
Their extensive range covers the northern Pacific, from the cold waters of the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands, south to Puget Sound, and westward into the Sea of Japan.
Behaviour
Coonstripe Shrimp are primarily bottom-dwellers, moving along the seafloor in search of food. They are opportunistic feeders, likely scavenging on detritus and small invertebrates in their deep-water environment. While specific seasonal movements are not well-documented, their life cycle involves spawning and growth in these deep habitats.
Edibility
★★★★★
Renowned for their sweet, delicate flavor and firm texture, Coonstripe Shrimp are considered a true delicacy. They are excellent when steamed, boiled, or grilled, offering a premium seafood experience.
Lure suggestion
For anglers targeting Coonstripe Shrimp, the most effective method involves specialized shrimp pots or traps. These deep-water traps should be baited with potent attractants like oily fish carcasses (e.g., salmon heads), fishmeal pellets, or commercial shrimp bait, and deployed to the seafloor at the appropriate depths. Success hinges on precise depth placement and ample soak time to draw these deep-dwelling crustaceans.
