About the Grass Pickerel

Often mistaken for young Northern Pike, the Grass Pickerel is a much smaller, slender member of the pike family, rarely exceeding 14 inches. Its body is typically olive-green to dark brown on the back, fading to a lighter belly. Distinctive dark, worm-like or wavy markings run vertically and diagonally along its sides, often forming a chain-like pattern. A prominent dark bar below the eye is a key identifier, and its snout is relatively long and duck-bill shaped, characteristic of the Esocidae.

Habitat

The Grass Pickerel is a master of camouflage in dense vegetation, favoring slow-moving streams, small rivers, and the shallow, weedy margins of ponds and lakes. They thrive in clear to slightly turbid waters with an abundance of aquatic plants, logs, and other cover where they can ambush prey.

Distribution

Its range extends across much of the central and eastern United States, from the Great Lakes region south to the Gulf Coast states, and west into parts of Oklahoma and Texas.

Behaviour

A quintessential ambush predator, the Grass Pickerel patiently lurks in dense weed beds, striking swiftly at unsuspecting prey. Their diet primarily consists of smaller fish, insect larvae, crayfish, and other aquatic invertebrates. They are generally solitary and territorial, exhibiting little seasonal migration, preferring to stay within their vegetated home territories year-round.

Edibility

★★★★★

While edible, Grass Pickerel meat is quite bony, making it less popular as a table fish compared to other species. The flesh is white and flaky with a mild flavor, but careful preparation is required to navigate the numerous small bones.

Lure suggestion

Grass Pickerel are aggressive strikers, readily attacking small artificial lures. Effective choices include small inline spinners, compact spoons, jigs tipped with soft plastic grubs, and tiny crankbaits retrieved along weed lines. Live minnows suspended under a bobber or fished slowly can also be highly effective.
