Longbill Spearfish

Tetrapturus pfluegeri

Also known as

Atlantic Spearfish, Long-billed Marlin, Longbill White Marlin

About the Longbill Spearfish

The Longbill Spearfish is a sleek and powerful billfish, distinguished by its exceptionally long, slender bill which is round in cross-section, unlike the more flattened bill of a White Marlin. These athletic fish typically reach lengths of up to 100 inches (254 cm) FL and can weigh over 128 pounds (58 kg). Its dark blue back fades to silvery sides and a white belly, providing effective camouflage in open ocean waters. Anglers can identify it by its relatively small dorsal fin that doesn't extend much past the pectoral fins, helping to differentiate it from other marlin species.

Habitat

Primarily an oceanic species, the Longbill Spearfish roams the vast open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It prefers to inhabit the upper layers of the water column, generally staying above the thermocline, making it accessible to surface trolling techniques.

Distribution

This species is endemic to the Atlantic Ocean, ranging widely across its temperate and tropical zones. While solitary, they are highly migratory, following baitfish concentrations across vast distances.

Behaviour

Longbill Spearfish are opportunistic predators, actively hunting pelagic schooling fish such as needlefish, small tuna, and jacks, as well as various squid species. They use their elongated bill to slash through schools of prey, then circle back to consume the stunned or injured fish. These fast-moving billfish are known for their incredible acrobatics when hooked, providing a thrilling challenge for anglers.

Edibility

★★★★

The meat of the Longbill Spearfish is firm, white, and has a mild, delicious flavor, making it excellent table fare. It's often prepared grilled, baked, or pan-seared, and is highly regarded by those who enjoy billfish.

Lure suggestion

Targeting Longbill Spearfish effectively involves trolling various artificial lures or natural baits at moderate to fast speeds. Small to medium-sized skirts and chuggers in natural colors like blue/white, green/yellow, or pink are highly effective. For natural bait, rigged ballyhoo, small mackerel, or squid presented on circle hooks with light to medium tackle will entice strikes.
