Habitat
This pelagic species prefers the vast expanse of open ocean waters, typically found offshore. While its exact environmental preferences are not fully detailed, it is understood to inhabit surface to mid-water depths in warm temperate and tropical seas.
Distribution
Native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean, its confirmed range stretches from Portugal down to Madeira, the Canary Islands, and northern Africa, extending into the western Mediterranean Sea as far as Sicily. Anglers should be aware that its distribution may be more widespread than currently understood.
Behaviour
Like other billfish, the Roundscale Spearfish is a swift and opportunistic predator, actively hunting smaller pelagic fish like sardines, mackerel, and squid. They are known for their acrobatic fights when hooked, often making impressive jumps and powerful runs. Their movements are primarily migratory, following bait schools and favorable water temperatures across the open ocean.
Edibility
★★★★★
The meat of the Roundscale Spearfish is considered good, offering a firm texture and a mild, pleasant flavor. It is suitable for grilling, broiling, or pan-searing, though many anglers choose to release these magnificent billfish.
Lure suggestion
Anglers targeting Roundscale Spearfish should focus on trolling methods, utilizing small to medium-sized lures in various colors, particularly those imitating squid or baitfish. Rigged natural baits such as ballyhoo or strip baits are also highly effective. Employ light to medium tackle, typically 20-30 lb class, with fluorocarbon leaders to maximize strikes from these often-finicky biters.
